Since Texas Executive Women began its mentoring programs in 1993, it has touched the lives of over 2,500 middle and high school girls. The goal behind mentoring is to create possibilities for young women, provide role models, spark the desire for a better life, and show them how to make it happen for themselves.

The Career Women of the Future programs at Westbury High School in Houston and Ball High School in Galveston, find TEW members contributing over 400 hours per school year to 10th and 11th grade girls in these programs. In monthly two-hour workshops, a core group of TEW volunteers works with the girls to create resumes, refine interview skills and learn ing about career possibilities.

Working with high school girls underscores the importance of solving problems early so positive attitudes are brought to high school. This is happening in the Ladies of Excellence program at Aldine Ninth Grade School. Here the emphasis is on improving self-esteem through team building activities, table etiquette classes, or learning how to create a positive image by the way they dress, participate in career tours and learning to be responsible for their own successes

Girls advancing to Aldine Senior High in 1996 pleaded to continue the mentoring experience -- so the Ladies of Distinction became a reality. Each year over 100 students meet for monthly seminars. Strong bonds are forged in a 3 to 1 relationship between the mentees and the campus mentors. The Ladies of Distinction collectively performed 6,000 hours of service in their community in the 2005-2006 school year!

Career tours are an integral part of each mentoring program. TEW members open their businesses providing female role models and the encouragement to reach for that dream.

"Graduates" of the Mentoring Programs have learned the valuable lesson of reaching out to those who are currently participating. Sharing their experiences with these young ladies allows them to become mentors themselves.

The Women on the Move ® Luncheon funds not only mentoring programs, but also scholarships for mentees graduating from high school and attending a university, junior college or vocational or career education school. Established in 1998 and named to honor mentoring program founder and 1985 Women on the Move ® , Jackie Greer, these scholarships are one more possibility created for the students.! Texas Executive Women has encouraged its mentoring students to further their education with over $36,000 in scholarships.
