LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Donna Balin

Greetings Magnificent Women!

It is hard to believe that the year is almost over. However, we still have a lot to look forward to before we say goodbye to 2004.

First on the list is the big luncheon this week! Time is running out if you have not made a reservation. Please come out and support the 2005 class of Women On The Move® and celebrate our 20-year anniversary. We are looking forward to a great time!

The votes are in, “TEW” votes that is! Thanks to all of you for taking time to cast your vote. I am privileged to announce the 2005 TEW Board of Directors. We truly appreciate each and every one of them for taking an interest in our organization and dedicating their time over the next term.

President, Ms. Bonnie Berube

President Elect, Ms. Barbara Halstead

Secretary, Ms. Sheila Cox Manning

Treasurer, Ms. Beverly Kaufman

Membership VP, Ms. Mamie Moy

WOM®/Special Events VP, Ms. Margo Donaldson Snider

Program VP, Ms. Jeann Howse

Communication VP, Ms. Sheila Johnstone-Ferendelli

Social VP, Ms. Sheridan Scott

Director At Large, Federation, Ms. Louella Hundt

Director At Large, Ms. Mary Ann Collier

I am elated to say that the board has voted to grant a lifetime honorary membership to a very special person, Ms. Jackie M. Greer. Jackie has made incredible contributions to TEW and the mentoring program and she amazingly continues to do so. Jackie was in the first class of WOM®, and has been ultimately responsible for many of the successes of TEW. The organization would not be what it is today without her and for that we wanted to reciprocate and say thank you for all of her hard work through the years.

TEW has a new address! Please update your records to reflect the following change:
PO Box 22593, Houston, Texas 77027

This is a much closer and convenient location for all responsible parties involved.

I wish all of you a very safe and Happy Thanksgiving. I hope that you are able to enjoy the time with your family and friends and to just be thankful !

Yours truly,

, CFP ®

TEW MENTORING PROGRAMMentoring

The mentoring programs have enjoyed overwhelming successes this year. The TEW members who have generously contributed their time, talent and experience to these programs are truly appreciated. The girls have reaped many benefits of course, but it couldn't have happened without you.

Read a beautiful letter from one of our greatest success stories in mentoring.

Westbury HS Career Women of the Future
TEW member M.K. Stalder spoke to the Career Women of the Future at Westbury High School on Friday, October 8. She led an interactive discussion on job interviewing and resumes skills. The girls produced drafts of their resumes focusing on their particular experiences. They will return to our November meeting with completed resumes. As many of the girls are seeking after school jobs, this was a timely and active session. M.K. is gracious in sharing her expertise and time with the Westbury program and the girls can really identify with her “been there” message.

And on a note of pride from the TEW Mentors, our Career Women of the Future Unyime Ekpa was selected as one of two Westbury High School students to attend a Youth Leadership Mission to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. She wrote an essay on racial and social tolerance for a contest sponsored by the People's Club, a campus based club devoted to promoting tolerance among the student body, and in conjunction with the Anti-Defamation League. The Westbury ambassadors will join with delegations from 11 other cities for a 3 ½ day program on personal responsibility and prejudice.

Ekpa, originally from Nigeria says “Once I began interacting with all different cultures, I saw it was wrong to judge other people. I'm excited to learn more about what I can do to have all cultures come together at Westbury.”

NEWS AMONG FRIENDS

  • Mamie Moy was recognized for a lifetime achievement in the field of public outreach to everyone from young learners to teachers to underrepresented groups.  She has made chemistry "real" for each audience and has ensured the future of her efforts by training others to perform outreach activities as well. She is also commended on the year-round range of her activities and the large number of people they benefit. The award is the Helen M. Free Award for Public Outreach, and it was presented at the 228th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia August, 2004.
  • Jeann Howse sent along a photo of Past Presidents, seated in order of the year they served. Can you name them all? (The photo does look very grainy, so don't go out and buy stronger glasses!)
