LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings all:

This month finds me not in the bathtub, but kicking back in frigid northeastern Kansas for a couple of weeks. The wind chill factor is hovering around zero after an entire weekend of snow, sleet and freezing rain (according to the meteorologist there is a difference). At this point, I'm wondering if there is something redeeming to be said about life in a small, rural, Midwestern community.

But I KNOW there is something to be said of big city living along the Texas Gulf Coast. So since Houston is our city of choice, TEW is definitely our organization of choice and it is imperative that all our members become an active part of this dynamic group in 2006.

Come on now, you paid your dues, isn't it time to buy into what TEW is best known for in our city? Namely, our “fantabulous” Women on the Move® Luncheon and the very deserving beneficiary of the funds raised from the luncheon, our stellar mentoring programs at Aldine High and Ninth Grade schools, Westbury and Ball high schools and related scholarships. Through these efforts TEW has created a niche in our city and we want to continue our success. But in order to do that we need everyone's support and interest.

We are off to a good start with our very capable Communication Vice President, Dorothy Weston Gibbons focusing on showcasing both programs. Try to spend some time at one of the monthly mentoring meetings, you'll be hooked and amazed at what these programs mean to the girls involved.

Beginning with this issue of the Networker we will feature pictures of what the girls in the mentoring programs have been up to: monthly meetings, outings, career trips – see the programs at work along with the wonderful TEW volunteers and campus mentors who give of their valuable time and energy.

We are getting geared up for Women on the Move® . Support this year's event by nominating an outstanding woman to be honored and then by getting out there and selling a table. Additionally, rally behind your organization and begin attending our monthly meetings. We are taking your suggestions on the member survey to heart.

Louella Hundt, Membership Vice President, will be implementing a few of those changes at the meetings. Programs have been planned to spike your interest and when you really get down to it, we've missed seeing you. To ensure that you don't miss out on what is going on, a calendar of events is debuting in the newsletter this month. It will continuously be updated so be sure to check it out.

And last but certainly not least, I am thrilled to welcome Florence Kusnetz to the Board. She has generously accepted the Director at Large position and I know the entire Board will look forward to her input and participation.

Come see what TEW is all about in 2006, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Your roving President,
Barbara

President

NEWS AMONG FRIENDS

My deepest thanks to all the TEW board of directors and members for their numerous demonstrations of sympathy on the passing of my husband, Julius (Al) Kaufman, Jr. on February 9th.  The generous contributions to the TEW Scholarship Fund in his memory were especially meaningful and appreciated.  At such a difficult time, the support of friends is the true spiritual medicine to get one through.  Bless you all for being so dear to Vanessa and me. Beverly Kaufman, President Elect

The Rose Breast Diagnostic Center  held an open house on January 26 to celebrate its $1.5 million renovation project. Dorothy Weston Gibbons, Co-Founder and CEO of The Rose, said the project doubled existing breast health services and created new areas of care.  Over 300 attendees joined in recognizing supporters. A highlight of the evening was the opening of the Randalls Community Conference and Resource Center, featuring a computerized research and lending library and private areas for consultation and reflection.

Katie Winslade (WOM 2004) was among four outstanding workers honored for her community service by the UTMB Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity. As the director of UTMB Office of Workforce Development, Katie has helped many minorities and women get ahead in jobs and in school. She was instrumental in setting up a program to allow employees to attend school, tuition paid, and get nursing degrees while working. Congratulations Katie.

Nancy Chang (WOM 2004) who co-founded her 20-year-old biotechnology firm Tanox developer of a highly successful HIV drug is stepping aside as CEO to give younger people in the firm “a fresh start.” She will remain as Chairwoman.

Dorothy Gibbons (WOM 2002) CEO of the Rose, raved in the Houston Chronicle about Jon Gordon, author of The 10-minute Energy Solution as he gave a free seminar for her employees on how to recharge their lives.

Judge Nancy Atlas (WOM 1994) had the honor or swearing in Mayor Bill White for his second two-year term.

Sharon Michael Owens (WOM 1994) was seen among the 800 notable guests of the Dr John B. Coleman United Negro College Fund gala held at the George R. Brown Convention Center where proceeds for scholarships to UNCF reached $340,000.00
